Accessibility in makeup: Make B. brings articulated brushes

Make B., one of O Boticário's lines, launches the first line of articulated makeup brushes in Brazil. With an internal push, articulation, and rotation mechanism, the item makes applying cosmetics easier and provides more precision and stability. According to data from the Ministry of Human Rights, today in Brazil, there are more than 18 million people with disabilities – half of them women. This corresponds to 10% of the national female population. It is a very significant number that "faces challenges in performing meticulous movements," points out Vanessa Machado, director of the gifts and accessories category at Grupo Boticário. "Holding traditional brushes can be a challenge for self-expression through makeup," she adds.

Made for all tastes: the line is composed of five articulated makeup brushes.

The new line of articulated brushes adapts to the needs of everyone. It ensures excellent usability when applying makeup for people with upper limb disabilities and/or motor and visual limitations.

In total, the line is comprised of five articulated brushes:

Spiral Makeup Brush Articulated Make B.: multifunctional, can be used for applying various products and textures, such as liquids, creams, and sticks.

Powder Brush Articulated Make B.: ideal for applying compact or loose powder, allows for even distribution of the product on the skin.

Duo Eye Brush Make B.: ideal for grooming and shaping eyebrows. On one side, a soft brush to organize the hairs, and on the other, an angled brush to fill in gaps and shape the eyebrows.

Articulated Kabuki Brush for Foundation Make B.: ideal for applying foundation, ensures easy, even application with high coverage.

Articulated Blush Brush Make B.: super versatile, can be used for applying blush, contour, and bronzers in all textures.

In general, the brushes come with a tactile mark at the base, which helps visually impaired people with sensory identification. The duo fiber bristles ensure an even application, without streaking or product buildup. Finally, the retractable articulating mechanism with a 360° rotation is a solution with customizable angling that adjusts to the needs of everyone.

Testing and approval of articulated makeup brushes

It is no secret that Grupo Boticário has stood out in decisions related to sustainability. A good example of this is that, for the past 24 years, none of its products have been tested on animals.

With a commitment to addressing Brazilian diversity, Grupo Boticário also conducts testing and approvals with the Comunidade Beleza Livre.

This is an online community made up of women and Black people, LGBTQIAP+ individuals, people with disabilities, and those over 45 years old. This group participates in product development.

“We evaluate accessibility, usability, and the articulated mechanism with people with upper-limb disabilities to understand their perception and identify improvement opportunities. For us, it is essential that this process is carried out for this audience and with them, bringing their narratives to the center of development,” emphasizes Vanessa.

Other Accessible and Inclusive Products from Grupo Boticário

The line of articulated makeup brushes is just one of the accessible and inclusive products recently launched by Grupo Boticário.

Earlier this year, Grupo Boticário released makeup brushes for people with visual impairments, including those who are blind or have low vision. Marketed under the brand Quem disse, Berenice?, they feature raised markings on the base.

Another initiative by the company was a pilot project that distributed inclusive accessories in various stores across Brazil.

Among the products were an adhesive base designed to support the packaging, providing friction to make opening the cap easier; and a multipurpose thickener that could be used to enhance the application of lipsticks, brushes, and pencils.
